One of Corum’s most well known watch models is their Coin Watch. The watch is made by splitting an American $ 20 or $ 10 gold coin into two pieces and hollowing them out. They are then used as the case back and dial with a very thin movement set in between them. From the beginning only mechanical movements were used, but later on they also started making quartz versions. Corum’s first Coin watch was manufactured in 1964 and presented at the Basel fair in 1965 with the slogan “Time is money” which later was changed to “Time in money”.

Although using American coins, it took quite a while before the watch had its breakthrough on the American market since American law prevents mutilation of official coins. But after a lengthy process of negotiation it was decided that an exception could be made since the work was made in Switzerland. Since then many American presidents have been seen wearing the watch.
