Bernhard J:son Wergeman was born in 1864 in Mönsterås, Sweden. He started as an apprentice at different watchmakers in 1877, but he could not get any advanced training near to his hometown. Therefor he moved to Stockholm three years later and succeeded with getting an apprenticeship with G.W. Linderoth, the appointed watchmaker to the court.

When Henning Hammarlud started Halda pocket watch factory, he soon realised he would be in need of some assistance. The by then only 24 years old Wergeman was chosen through recommendations, but was told to grow a full beard to command more respect.
Wergeman became the workshop manager. He functioned as the assisting constructor, trainer and was in charge of both production and quality control. He contributed a lot to turning Hammarlund’s ideas into reality and made sure all of his requirements were met.

"According to a handwritten note from my father-in-law, Bernhard Wergeman, to his daughter – my wife - Eva Wergeman Golteus, both now deceased, was this pocket watch made by my wife’s grandfather Bernhard J:son Wergeman when he was the workshop manager at Halda Fickurfabrik. It also says on the same note that Bernhard J:son used this watch daily."
